Biodiversity By The Bay

Biodiversity By The Bay

Mumbai’s extensive coastline, ample evergreen coastal mangroves forest and massive terrestrial urban forest of tall trees and bamboos right in the heart of the city defines its rich biodiversity hotspot. However, the financial capital of India is fast losing it’s rich and extraordinary range of biodiversity due to the increased pace of development. This is affecting the environment as well as the indigenous communities, especially the fisherfolk community and Warli tribes that thrive on these ecosystems.

The Biodiversity by the Bay campaign was launched with an aim to create a climate movement of young, progressive Mumbaikars who will lead an inclusive and active climate debate, and form a strong constituency that influences sustainable policy making in India.

1. Wetland Matters

Mumbai’s wetlands are a vital resource for sustainable development of the people and their coexistences with nature. Do the existing management and conservation laws leave these ecosystems vulnerable? To understand the nuances we organised a webinar with three thought leaders—Gayatri Singh, Senior Advocate, Bombay High Court, Zaman Ali, Advocate, Bombay High Court and Stalin Dayanand, Vanashakti, that have an expertise with the various laws and regulations governing wetlands. Besides shedding light on the existing laws that govern wetlands they also emphasized on the roles and responsibilities of the youth in wetland conservation.

2. Envisioning Mumbai’s Green Recovery

3. People’s Biodiveristy Register

The best way of sensitising people about the importance of biodiversity conservation is to make them a part of the process. The Biological Diversity Act provides an excellent opportunity for this in the form of a People’s Biodiversity Register. The Biodiversity Management Committee is to prepare the People’s Biodiversity Register in consultation with local people. The Register shall contain comprehensive information on availability and knowledge of local biological resources, their medicinal or any other use or any other traditional knowledge associated with them.

4. Mumbai Matters

Today’s youth are the future of tomorrow and will be in professions and trades that will shape the city of Mumbai. In an attempt to provide these youth with a platform for showcasing their research in the public domain and lead an active climate debate we invited young architecture and planning students to share their ideas on sustainable development for Mumbai. We are delighted to present the vision of some of these young Mumbaikar’s in a series of articles that attempt to drive design, policies and governance towards an equitable and just environment.
